Regarding our computers we all usually have a lot of cables. These are one, two or more wires or optical fibres that are bound together. Usually they are in a common protective jacket or sheath. In general these individual wires or fibres that are inside the jacket may be covered or insulated. Combining cables may contain both electrical wires and optical fibres. Usually an electrical wire is copper because this material has an excellent conductivity. Sometimes also aluminium is used because it costs less. Typically electrical cables are made more flexible by stranding the wires. Usually smaller individual wires are twisted or braided together in order to produce larger wires that are more flexible than solid wires of similar size.
Cables can and also should be securely fastened and organized. This can be done by using cable trees. Earlier it was quite common that cables were often insulated with using cloth, rubber and even paper. Today plastic materials are used except for high reliability power cables. So there are four types of plastic insulation that are used in telecommunications cables today, i.e. solid, cellular, foam skin and skin-foam-skin.
Today it is very important to keep unwanted EMI/RFI from entering circuits, especially regarding sensitive electronics. This interference protection can be accomplished passively with shielding along the length of the cable or it can be done by running the cable in an enclosure separate from any other wires that may induct noise. This protection can also be actively achieved.
