THE FIRST AMERICAN PUNCHBOARDS |
Handmade raffle game directory boards, the forerunners of the modem punchboard and push card, were in use in saloons in this country as early as 1795. The first was probably invented by some ingenious saloon-keeper who saw that such a board would enable him to run a raffle for the individual customer. These early raffle boards were eight inch-square wooden boards, half an inch thick, with 100 or so quarter inch holes drilled through the board, each of which contained a rolled-up, numbered slip of paper. The player paid a nickel, dime or quarter for a chance, and then used a nail to push out one of the numbered slips. If his number corresponded to a predetermined winning number, he received a bottle of liquor or a cash award.
The raffle online game board disappeared about 1815 because too many saloonkeepers were holding out the top winning numbers for themselves. They reappeared about 1870 in a slightly different form. Still handmade, they were of cardboard instead of wood and were called punchboards because the players pushed out the numbered slips by punching a hole through a paper covering glued to the front and back surfaces of the board.
It wasn't until the invention of the automatic punchboard-manufacturing machine in 1910 that punchboards flooded the country. Five years later one of the largest punchboard manufacturers estimated that 30 million punch boards and push cards had been sold during the period 1910 to 1915.
The popularity of the punch board reached its peak in 1939, when 50 million were sold in that one year. Since the average punchboard contains 200 holes (chances) and the average price per chance is 7¢, this means that 10 billion chances were sold that year for gross revenue of $700 million.
As evidence that the manufacture of punch boards was a lucrative business, take the case of one of the many punchboard manufacturers, George D. Sax. He left the business some years ago, used his profits to buy into a Chicago bank and became chairman of the board. Later he retired to Florida, where he built the fabulous Saxony Hotel at Miami Beach for a reputed $5 million.
Since 1950 the popularity of punchboards has declined steadily.
They are now outlawed in many states, and many players seem to have caught on to the fact that punchboards are very often crooked and that their chances of winning, even when the board is honest, are practically nil. A crooked punch board is one which the manufacturer sells with a secret key giving the location of most of the winning holes. We can see many links directory on internet regarding punchboards.
