Cutting the Costs of Staying Cool |
The costs of staying cool can be reduced by a significant amount by the use of a newer, more energy efficient air conditioner. If you are buying a new one, watch out for the Energy Star logo. Installing the right size for your room or house is also important. But if you already have one installed, what can you do to reduce your cost?
Insulation in both walls and ceiling is a big factor. If you don't have the correct insulation, then cool air will be lost much more quickly. An easier problem to fix is window insulation. Heat certainly comes in through glass and if you have large windows you will save quite a bit by using rubber backed curtains.
But what about that great view? If you don't want to lose it, there are other ways to insulate the windows.
• Use awnings outside to create shade.
• Use deciduous trees to create shade in the summer and let in warmth throughout the winter.
• Install double glaze windows.
• Metallic coating is cheap, easy to get and install, and lasts about 10 years.
