Performance enhancement in HP StorageWorks 4400 Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA4400) as compared to EVA4100 |
HP has always introduced new technologies in order to provide robust, reliable, and high storage mediums for the enterprise and midsize customers. Therefore, HP storage works has developed EVA (Enterprise Virtual Array) that provides dynamic configuration, re-configuration, storage enabling capacity pooling, automatic performance load balancing, and provides assistance for management process. HP has made advancements and improved the performance of EVA4100 and has introduced new EVA4400. EVA4400’s performance scales up to the maximum number of disk drives supported in random workloads.
EVA4400 provides higher data transfer rate, which improves the efficiency of backups, streaming video and data warehousing. As a result, this increases the response time and performance of transaction-orientated databases, Emails and files systems. The HP EVA4400 real-world performance is much better than the EVA4100 and is also more affordable. The EVA4400 provides improved sequential performance levels and reduces the cost and complexity.
The EVA arrays are mainly used for two classes of workloads by the users, ‘large block sequential’ and ‘small block random’.
EVA4400 allows the customers to choose configurations according to their required needs and therefore, the performance of the scales with the number of its disk drives.
The random workload performance of the EVA4400 is approximately twice that of EVA4100. The EVA4400 has increased number of disk drives coupled with increased controller capability.
The ultimate goal of HP (R&D) Storage Works is to introduce trustworthy new products that increase efficiency, performance, provide low cost of customer’s ownership, reliability, quality and provide value to the customers.
The performance numbers of HP relates to the combined performance of normal data path and the normal code path as “end-to-end” performance numbers. The normal data path includes the array’s Fiber Channel connections to servers, disk drives, cache and internal buses. On the other hand normal code path includes firmware/software that moves user data between its disk drives and the servers that connect to the array. The cache performance numbers are obtained from 100% cache-only accesses.
The typical data and code paths used in a customer situation are an excellent choice for capacity planning when obtained under two additional engineering constraints
These numbers relate to the End-to-end performance numbers. For evaluating performance HP usually suggests to use uniform probability to access most usable array capacity. This performance measurement is more reliable than short-stroking (configuration that allows the disk to access only a small fraction of the drives’ capacity). The average response time is 30 milliseconds or less in the “end-to-end” throughputs.
This measurement provides the customers with best data and these measurements can be used for sizing in a real-life business condition.
The cache performance numbers register the largest throughput numbers possible with an array. HP does not recommend this measurement, because the disk may get overloaded due to usage of cache performance numbers for capacity planning. The cache performance numbers do not reflect the real results under normal business conditions, therefore, their usefulness for capacity planning is diluted. These performance numbers give an artificial view of an array’s performance capabilities. The results of array’s data and code paths does not show the actual response times because the cache-only data path is shorter than the normal data path. The interaction of the cache with a disk array’s disk drives is most important in the cache performance numbers. In day-to-day operations the Cache performance numbers are unsustainable.
